You can quite easily afford a 206 on your budget. Whether you can afford the additional bumper (or would want to!) is a different matter.

I'm not up to date on prices and models on the UK but I would think maybe a Honda Civic hatchback, the new Volvo C30 is great but I would think it costs more than 10K.

something like the 206 would be good for you, how about a Nissan Micra or a Vauxhall Corsa?

You have not said if you are going for new or secondhand. Personally I would recommend that you go for a `nearly new' car from a main dealer so that it is fully guaranteed and thoroughly checked out before you drive it off. Peugeot look nice and drive okay but are not very reliable. So what about the new Susuki Swift ( a great looking car) , SEAT Ibiza Sport or Renault Clio. Just make sure you buy from a dealer you can trust and that you can get the car serviced locally to avoid the hassle of driving miles for a service.

For a first time buyer i think that the polo is a very good car, it keeps it value, german, solid build quaility, however the insurance maybe it bit more expensive say when compared to the new yaris, which is a very nice car. I would try too look for something diesel. The polo should be your best bet!

I would buy a 5 year old Honda Civic.Do some research at consumerreports.org before you buy. (Pay them the $5 or $10 fee. It is worth it.) I always do this before I buy.Generally, a honda civic is an all around good car, mechanically sound with few head aches.Getting a car that is 5 years old cuts a lot of the depreciation out. You get a lot of bang for you buck. Use your money left over to invest with.
