Let's see ... by the way you asked your question, it sounds like you don't need a true 4x4 and could deal with an AWD vehicle. When choosing a new vehicle, be sure and see that everything is balanced. By this, I mean some manufacturers market only a single part of the vehicle. Dodge, for instance, emphasizes their "Hemi" motors more than anything else. Well, besides the motor, the vehicle is pretty bland. Not bashing Dodge or anything, just an example. As far as family friendly and quality are concerned, I would consider the following manufacturers:Acura http://www.acura.comHonda http://www.hondacars.comToyota http://www.toyota.comNissan http://www.nissanusa.comMazda http://www.mazda.comIf you'd specified a budget, the list would be more accurate.Check these vehicles out!!Acura RDX --- 4 cyl. AWD TurboHonda CRV --- 4 cyl. AWDHonda Pilot --- 6 cyl. AWDToyota Rav4 --- 4 or 6 cyl. AWDNissan Pathfinder --- V6 4x4Mazda CX-7 --- 4 cyl. AWD TurboThe reason I've listed mainly 4 cyl. vehicles is because of the insane price of fuel. Not sure where you're located, but it is crazy to fill up a V6 or V8 when you can have great power with a proper 4 cyl. I would look at safercar.gov for saftey ratings and crash test data for any vehicle before putting my family in it.I would also look at:http://www.edmunds.com for reviews and comparisonshttp://www.kbb.com for MSRP and Invoice pricing

It really depends on the capacity that you will be using your vehicle. A lot of your all wheel drive vehicles are not capable for moderate to heavy off road use and a lot of your all wheel drive vehicles do not have a low range option. So if you are looking for a vehicle that will give you an extra measure of safety when you are driving on improved road surfaces or dirt/gravel surfaces then an all wheel drive is a good choice. If you will be doing some off roading like driving on the beach or doing some driving in muddy or rocky conditions then an all wheel drive with low range or 4 wheel drive with low range vehicle will be a better choice. So figure out what you will be using the 4X4 for and that should help you make the choice. Good luck. Adub

Get a subaru station wagon. They are excellent. Many people compare their reliability to range rovers. They are also very economical and don't depreciate as fast as other japanese cars. People will not hate you on this like they would on an SUV which kills the earth! this car actually heals the earth and reverses the effects of global warming!!! Seriously though, this is a very good car.http://autos.yahoo.com/2007_subaru_forester_sports_2.5xt/

What would be good is an all wheel or 4 wheel drive vehicle that is also a good family vehicle. Most 4wd vehicles aren't very good family vehicles as they don't handle very well and are fairly uncomfortable, rolling around and pitching on normal roads as they're set up for off road work. All wheel or 4wd vehicles I would recommend are Subaru Forester, which are constant all wheel drive, handle as well or better than most cars and are comfortable. The manual versions are also full 4WD with low range. In normal 4wd vehicles, I'd recommend the Land cruiser Prado, which isn't too big and are just about the pick of them.Another which is quite good is the Suzuki Vitara , in a smaller full 4WD.

BUY A GM. If it was me i would look at the new Chevy Tahoe, or Suburban. This SUV has the Flex Fuel motor so it car run on up to 85% ethanol. and when you are driving on the highway instead of a 8 cylinder it becomes a 4 to conserve fuel but it keeps the same speed. Also there are many after market things you can do.

well you can look at this in two ways a reliable family SUV with a modest price like the Toyota Highlander; Honda Pilot; Acura MDX; Lexus rx330/350 Nissan Murano; and the Infinity FX35 they are very reliable and good family vehicles Subaru Forester. When you say good quality if you mean reliable than you want one of the previous suv's as they are very reliable but if you mean build quality an luxury than you should look at Audi Q7; BMW X5; VW Tuareg Land rover Range rover Sport or LR3 or Mercedes GL. if you are looking for a balance of decent reliability and good build quality i would recommend the Audi or BMW they are both decent in reliability and quality if build quality is the most important and you don't mind repairs then the range rover is very nice.
