When driving in heavy rain, i notice that water tends to collect into the slight grooves in the road that formfrom years of cars driving on the road. When I drive in these grooves it seems like my car slightly "hydroplanes" --is this what hydroplaning is, and also is this actually what is happening, or does it just seem like it?? If this is hydroplaning, then where is safest point to drive (i mean you cant totally avoid the grooves on a 2 lane road otherwise your driving on shoulder!). any driving experts out there???(sorry didnt mean to post this in cooking/recipes)

yes thats hydroplaning ... in a short short ... best thing for you to do in situations like that is reduce your speed so your tires will hug the road a little better .. also, check the tread on your tires and replace them if necessary.

Your right my friend that is hydroplaning. Just drive a bit slower then normal and make sure your tires are not bald. You'll be fine.

Yeah.....hydroplaning occurs when the layer of water basically separates your tires from the road...therefore they do not grip and you lose control. Treads defiantly help to break the water up and make contact with the road. The best thing is to take it easy on acceleration, brake sooner, turn slower etc. etc.

Yep thats hydroplaning! The best way to avoid it is as you said to stay out of the grooves in the road. So when you do find yourself in the grooves slowly let off the gas a little and steer out of the grooves in a very gentle and slow manner and wait for the car to get out of the grooves. Slow down in these conditions and use your wipers and headlights. Also remember there are people with bad eyesight, bald tires, old people with slow reflexes, young people with no experiance, cars needing brake jobs and every sort of hazard out there and just slowing down a bit could make it better for everyone around you.

It's very unlikely that your car is hydroplaning when you see the grooves in the road. Hydroplaning usually occurs when you're going 55 mph or faster and run through a puddle of water. You basically lose control of the steering of the vehicle and won't be able to stop. The best thing to do in this situation is to loosen up on your steering wheel instead of trying to countersteer and just let the momentum of the car carry you foward while you take your foot off the gas pedal to slow down. You'll eventually regain control of the vehicle.It's best to brake and slow your vehicle down before you hit one of these puddles. Otherwise you're gonna be in trouble if you try to stop while hydroplaning.
