I just bought my car a month ago (standard) and have never driven it in the snow until last night and it was all over the road everytime I got to a red light and went from 1st to second it was swerve into other cars..im terrified! I have 4x4 but I dont know if its already on or not ..there is this thing in my car that looks like a mini shifter and says 4h 4l and two other options what is this and if I kick those into gear will my car stop going all over the road? Please Help!

Drive Slow

That small shifter is what engages your 4 wheel drive. Read your manual and that will tell you which to use for specific conditions. As far as driving in the snow, here are four tips for you: 1. Drive slower (10 - 15 mph), 2. Increase the distance between you and the vehicle to your front, 3. When starting from a complete stop, let yur vehicle start rolling on its own before applying gas (in a standard, let the clutch out slowly until the gears engage), then apply enough gas to get rolling smoothly. Practice this on your home street before getting out in serious traffic. 4. If you start to skid, turn your wheels into the skid and this will straighten you out. Don't over compensate or make it a real fast jerky move. Do it smoothly. Hope this helps.

Buy snow tires, slow down, and read the owner's manual.

The mini shifter is what you use to engage/disengage your 4x4 (turn it on/off). I do not have 4x4, so I do not know whether you should use 4h or 4l. My guess would be 4h. Engaging the 4x4 should help stop or minimize the car sliding on the road.When driving in snow or any other type of bad weather, you should drive slower, leave plenty of room in front of you when traveling behind another vehicle and stop/start slowly.
