Default How can I spend less on gas for a car that gets 18 mpg?

I just turned 16 and i want a car with good gas mileage as gas prices are outrageous these days. I found an extremely nice BMW that is in my price range but it only gets 18 mpg (not terrible, but not great) I wanted to get a car that gets about 30mpg. So does anyone have any tips other than accelerating slower, braking less, and all of that??

you know the basics of it already those cars wont get really good mileage but they are dependable, keep it tuned up really well and keep the tires inflated really good, and that's about all you can do for it,for what your driving 18 isn't bad,but like you said also gas prices aren't helping anything either, good luck.

if you are worried about fuel prices, then i would suggest not buying a bmw.the cost to maintain them properly is pretty spendy.best off getting a honda civic. must cheaper to maintain and definately better fuel economy.

Service it regularly, and keep the alignment and tyre pressures where they should be. Other than that, buy a stick shift - you get better volumetric efficiency (more power for the fuel you use) whenever you're in a high gear. This means that driving up a hill at 25mph in 5th uses less gas than in 4th - but in an auto, you don't get much of a choice what gear you're in. If you want to accelerate, just push on the gas - since it's not an auto, it won't downshift. In fact, the best volumetric eficiency is found with the throttle wide open in top gear at low RPM - this is why diesel engines are so efficient. In fact, BMW themselves found out a few years ago that they obtained their best efficiency by flooring the gas in each gear - and shifting at only 1500 rpm!Good luck!

Sorry, but 18 MPG is "TERRIBLE" gas mileage. If you drive 15,000 miles a year @ 3.30 per galBMW $2752.20 per year for fuel ($1100.20 more) vs 30 MPG car $1650over say 5 years that is $5501 more and if gas goes up that might be over $6k over 5 years, are you purchasing the gas or Mommy & daddy???our tip is, buy a senceable car until you can afford something else.

When you're at the gas station pumping gas, and you're down to the last dollar of it going in, try squeezing the gas handle up and down a little. I've noticed more gas gets into the car when you do that. You sort of "trick" the gas pump and you get a little extra that way
