call the BBB and contact a consumer attorney. They might throw some weight around.

If you bought the car "as is" there is probably nothing you can do. However it sounds like the car had some sort of limited warranty, or guarantee attached to it. You should call your states consumer protection office. State law might be on your side. here is an excerpt from their websiteNew Jersey's Lemon Law Unit handles new car, used car and motorized wheelchair ( power scooter) complaints. Some of the documents below are provided in a PDF (Portable Document Format) file, which can be viewed or printed using your Web browser and a PDF Reader. If you do not have a PDF Reader, please click here.Under the used car lemon law, used car dealers are required to provide warranties on every used car that is sold for more than $3,000, that is less than seven [7] years old, has not been declared a total loss by an insurance company and has an odometer reading of 100,000 miles or less. For more information please call the Lemon Law Unit at 973-504-6226 or write to P.O. Box 45039, Newark, New Jersey 07101.
