Default buying a car you want at a dealership?

in 2003 i tried to buy a 03 kia rio new, and was told by the salesman i couldn't because i made too much money and that my credit allowed me to buy a 03 kia spectra or optima instead? is this for real or was he pulling my chain? i tried to argue with him, but he said it was true what he said, so i left the dealership without him trying to keep me from leaving and buying a new car. what the hell did i miss?

He was pulling your chain... He was trying to up sell you to a more expensive vehicle. It was very smart to leave.

That's the biggest load of shit I've heard. I would talk to the guys manager and see what he said about it. And if he's the manager, then speak with the owner.

They are always trying to find an angle to work. This one sounds kind of stupid to me. But no one ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the average American. The next two guys probalby bought the upgrade.

go back and talk to his supervisor, tell him/her that that dealer was trying to sell you a more expinseve car so he could make more money, if you made $10000000000000 a year it dosent mean you cant but a $1000 car

COMMISSION-BASED SALE!!!The better the car he sells, the better his paycheck will be.If you made more than enough money to afford a Rio, then why wouldn't he pursue the deal? Because this would be a two-fold deal. He sells you a car that you can't afford>you can't keep up the payments>you either have to turn-in the car to them or it gets repossessed>he can then sell that same car as a used model.Don't go to any managers, go to the General Manager or the owner of the dealership. Which in some cases is an out-of-state office building.

Wow, I've heard of some weird azz sh!t from car dealers but that's a first! I think the Rio probably had next to no profit margin on it which meant he would get a low commision, $100 - $200. The Spectra or Optima have a lot more features that can add profit margin so would bump his commision up. Remember they get 25% AFTER the dealer makes it's cost back, plus PAC. So a Rio might have a $500.00 dealer profit, plus holdback from manufacturer so the salesman would get the bare minimum commision. The other cars have 1-3k profit in them, which means $250 - $750 in commision. That is definately one of the slimiest things I've ever heard. The desk must not have needed to sell any more of the Rios and were pushing hard to get rid of the others.

He was trying to "upsell" you...to a more expensive car. I wouldn't go back to that dealer ever again if that's the kind of salespeople they hire.

????? I sell cars and I've never heard anything as that!!! First if you don't buy, he makes $0. Comission is paid on the diffrence between sale price and internal cost (usually invoice +$300-$500) so it's not a comission upsale. just a stupid(and I'd guess unemployed)salesman
