The S means the engine is supercharged for for more power and performance. Drive one of each and notice the big difference.

The Cooper S is no longer supercharged, but for 2007 is turbocharged and it feels and drives differently than the SC car.The Cooper also has a new engine for 2007, with about 120 HP. So it's not nearly as fast as the S, but it's a nice little engine with BMW's VANOS system for variable valve control.So you buy the S for power and the base Cooper for economy. Both are fun and the base car is fast enough for most people.

Besides the obvious price difference, the engine is more super-charged in the S than the regular. Also, there are more features in the S (performance suspension, run flat tires, etc).
