Kelley Blue book or NADA can give you approximate values. They vary from location so I would input your information there as well.It is also best to take a BMW of this class for a PrePurchaseInspection at a local reputable european/BMW repair shop for $50-100. This will help you get a fair assessment of the problems there may be now and in the near future.

Now that is one expensive car to repair. And at 134K it might be ripe for some major work. Do yourself a HUGE favor. Bring to a qualified BMW mechanic and have him look at it in detail bumper to bumper. Especially engine and tranny. I'll bet the car was raced or run hard many times. It will cost you but likely save you much more in headaches and in the pocket to have it checked out carefully.

134k is a lot of miles on that V8. Plus, who has owned it? Has it been railed to death? 134k is where a lot of the common 'wear and tear' items need replacing on all BMWs. IF THE TITLE IS CLEAR, a fair price for an M5 with that milage would be around $25000. But there is another problem with your question. BMW DID NOT MAKE AN M5 IN 1997. The first M5 in that body style (E39) was in 1998. So if you are buying a 1997 M5 you better check the seller because he is selling you a car that doesn't exist.
